Graduation is a monumental milestone in life, marking the culmination of hard work, dedication, and personal growth. As a photographer, I love capturing the joy and excitement of this special occasion through stunning graduation photos. In this blog post, I’ll share tips for planning a memorable graduation shoot and ideas to make your photos truly unique.
Graduation photos are more than just pictures; they are a celebration of your achievements and a way to remember this significant chapter in your life. Whether you’re graduating from high school, college, or any other program, having professional photos taken can help you commemorate your journey and the friendships you’ve made along the way.
Selecting a meaningful location for your graduation shoot is crucial. Here are a few ideas:
- Campus Grounds: Capture your academic journey at your school or university, showcasing iconic landmarks or spaces where you spent your time.
- Parks or Gardens: Natural settings provide beautiful backdrops with lush greenery and blooming flowers.
- Urban Settings: If you love city vibes, consider incorporating urban elements like brick walls, murals, or cityscapes into your photos.
Gracie was graduating from North Carolina State University. She is becoming a speech therapist. Ironically when I was younger I had to go to a speech therapist. Her journey really spoke to me and I told her how impactful my speech therapist was to me. I can still recall her name, Lisa. She made the sessions so fun for me and I think my story really allowed Gracie to see how impactful her future will truly be.
Tip: Think about locations that resonate with your experiences during your academic years!
Your outfit is a significant part of your graduation photos. Here are some ideas to consider:
- Cap and Gown: This classic combination is a must-have for any graduation shoot. Consider customizing your gown with stoles or cords that represent your achievements.
- Casual Outfits: Bring a change of clothes that reflects your personal style. Whether it’s a trendy outfit, a sundress, or smart casual wear, these shots can showcase who you are outside of academia.
- Accessories: Don’t forget to add personal touches! Jewelry, hats, or even a bouquet can enhance your look and make your photos feel unique.
Tip: Plan your outfits in advance and choose colors that complement your location.
Gracie had a gorgeous white dress that really stood out amongst her red cap and gown. I loved how it complimented her skin tone, and her gorgeous red hair. The amount of times I asked her during the session if she was a model was too many too count.
Props can add a fun and personalized element to your graduation photos. Here are some ideas:
- Books or Notebooks: Show off your field of study or the subjects you loved by incorporating books related to your major.
- Diploma or Certificate: Include your diploma or certificate in some shots to highlight your achievement.
- Balloon or Signs: Use playful balloons or signs with your graduation year or a motivational quote that resonates with you.
- Champagne: My personal favorite. Pop bottles. It just shows the true celebration of finishing off college.
Tip: Be creative and choose props that reflect your personality or the journey you’ve taken.
While posed shots are essential, some of the best memories come from candid moments. I encourage graduates to embrace their emotions—laugh, celebrate, and express joy! Capture interactions with friends, family, or professors, as these moments will tell your story beautifully. Gracie and I were able to catch sun set and my favorite moment were when the sun was descending behind the buildings of NC State and back lightening her making her look angelic and ethereal.
Tip: Don’t be afraid to show your personality! Jump, dance, or share a laugh during the shoot for those genuine, unforgettable moments.
Consider the timing of your graduation photos. If you want to capture the beauty of natural light, plan your shoot during the golden hour—shortly after sunrise or before sunset. The soft, warm light can create a dreamy and flattering effect in your images. This was exactly what Gracie and I did. We managed to get the most out of the shoot. We truly chased the sunset and it was not unsuccessful.
Tip: Schedule your shoot in advance, especially if you’re planning to work around family and friends who want to join you.
After your graduation shoot, consider celebrating with your family and friends! Whether it’s a small get-together, a dinner, or a fun outing, take the time to enjoy your accomplishment together.
Graduation is a momentous occasion that deserves to be celebrated and remembered. With the right planning, outfits, and a skilled photographer, you can capture stunning photos that will last a lifetime. If you’re graduating soon and looking to document this special moment, I’d love to help you create beautiful memories that reflect your unique journey!
