The Brown's
As a family portrait photographer based in Canada, I have the privilege of capturing the love, laughter, and connections that define families. With Canada’s stunning landscapes and diverse backdrops, there’s no shortage of beautiful locations for family photos. In this blog post, I’ll share my favorite spots for family portraits and tips for making your session memorable. I took family pictures of my big brother, his wife and their son right in front of Niagara Falls. The day was perfect, not overly crowded and the temperature was spectacular.
Family portraits are more than just photographs; they are timeless keepsakes that document your family’s journey and milestones. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply want to capture your family’s unique dynamics, these portraits serve as cherished reminders of your love and togetherness.
Top Locations for Family Portraits in Canada
Canada is home to some of the most breathtaking landscapes, and I love using these natural backdrops to create stunning family portraits. Here are a few of my favorite locations:
- Banff National Park, Alberta
- With its majestic mountains, turquoise lakes, and sprawling forests, Banff offers a stunning backdrop for family portraits. The iconic Lake Louise or the scenic Bow Valley can create a picturesque setting for your photos.
- Vancouver’s Stanley Park, British Columbia
- Stanley Park is a beautiful urban oasis with lush greenery, ocean views, and charming pathways. It’s perfect for capturing vibrant, family-friendly moments.
- Niagara Falls, Ontario
- The iconic falls provide a dramatic backdrop for family portraits. You can capture the awe and excitement of being near one of nature’s wonders.
- Quebec City’s Old Town
- With its cobblestone streets and historic architecture, Old Quebec offers a charming European vibe for family portraits. The vibrant colors and rich history make it a unique setting.
- Prince Edward Island’s Beaches
- The stunning red sand beaches and rolling hills of PEI create a relaxed and beautiful environment for family portraits, especially during sunset.
Tip: Choose a location that resonates with your family’s personality and interests. This will make the experience more enjoyable and meaningful! Luckily for Stewart and Suzanne Canada resonates with us immensely. Our aunt lives in Burlington Ontario and we came up for Stewarts 40th birthday celebration and Canada Day. I had never seen the Niagara falls before so we took the opportunity to go see it for myself and Leo- their son.
To ensure a smooth and enjoyable portrait session, consider the following tips:
- Schedule Wisely
- Choose a time that works best for your family, taking into account nap times for little ones or any special events. Golden hour—shortly after sunrise or before sunset—offers the best natural light for beautiful photos.
- Dress for Success
- Coordinate outfits that reflect your family’s style while ensuring everyone feels comfortable. Soft colors and natural tones often work well with outdoor settings. Avoid busy patterns that can distract from your family’s interactions.
During the session, relax and have fun! I encourage families to interact naturally—play games, share jokes, and enjoy each other’s company. The best photos often come from genuine moments of connection and laughter.
Tip: Don’t stress about getting everyone to look at the camera. Candid moments often tell the most beautiful stories!
After your portrait session, consider celebrating with a family outing or a special meal. It’s a great way to reflect on the fun you had during the shoot and create even more memories together. After we took photos we actually hopped on a boat tour. Lucky for us we did it after because Stewart forgot that during the tour you get soaking wet. So timing for this was perfect because we were drenched after it.
Family portraits are a wonderful way to celebrate your family’s unique journey, and Canada’s stunning landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for these cherished moments. If you’re looking to capture your family’s love and connection in a beautiful setting, I’d love to help you create lasting memories through photography.
