CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA
CAREY & ZACH
As a photographer based in North Carolina, I've had the privilege of working as a second shooter for a variety of weddings and events. While being the primary photographer comes with its own set of challenges and excitement, second shooting offers a unique perspective and a different set of responsibilities that I truly enjoy. At Carey and Zach's wedding I had the luxury of working along side Rebecca who when I first met, I traveled out of state with. We did another wedding together a few weeks before this one and we mesh so well together.
A second shooter plays a crucial role in assisting the lead photographer by capturing angles, moments, and details that might otherwise be missed. My job isn’t just about snapping pictures but also anticipating moments and creating a cohesive set of images. Some key responsibilities include:
- Capturing candid moments: While the lead photographer focuses on the key shots, I’m often in charge of getting those candid, behind-the-scenes moments that tell the full story of the day.
- Wide-angle shots and details: During the ceremony, I often focus on wide shots, venue details, or shots from a different angle that complement the primary photographer's work.
- Assisting with lighting and setup: Whether it's adjusting the lighting for portraits or setting up for group shots, I help ensure that everything looks perfect.
- Backup and support: As the second shooter, my role is to support the lead photographer, whether it’s helping with a tricky shot or making sure all technical aspects of the camera are in order.
As a North Carolina-based photographer, I’ve had the chance to shoot at various venues, from rustic barns in the mountains to elegant waterfront settings along the coast. Every location brings its own challenges—lighting, space, and logistics. Learning how to adapt quickly to each venue has been one of my most valuable lessons as a second shooter. On this day we were lucky enough to be gifted with the most amazing light as the sun was setting. We found a field right behind where the ceremony took place and it is by far one of my favorite moments from this season and one of my top ten photos that I have captured.
Second shooting means working alongside another photographer, often someone with a different style or workflow. Communication before the wedding day is essential. Rebecca and I are very similar and work really well together. So for this day things went so smoothly and we were able to capture fantastic moments throughout without their being any issues. Understanding the timeline, preferred shots, and how you can complement each other's work.
North Carolina weddings can be full of surprises! From the unpredictable weather in the mountains to spontaneous dance moves at beach ceremonies, you have to be ready for anything. Being a second shooter requires you to anticipate key moments—like the father’s first look at the bride or the candid laughter between guests during the reception.
Sometimes, the best moments happen in a split second. Whether it’s the couple’s first kiss or an emotional speech, you have to be quick on your feet and adjust your settings on the fly. This is especially true when shooting in diverse environments like the forests of Asheville or the lively streets of Charlotte.
While second shooting can sometimes feel like an assistant role, it’s actually one of the best ways to develop as a photographer. It’s a chance to observe seasoned professionals, ask questions, and refine your own techniques. Working as a second shooter also helps me learn how to think on my feet, stay organized, and ensure that every moment is documented seamlessly.
Whether I’m capturing the scenic beauty of a mountain-top wedding or the intimate moments at a small-town chapel, second shooting in North Carolina has been an incredible experience. It’s not just about taking great photos; it’s about learning, supporting other photographers, and contributing to a larger creative vision. If you're just starting in wedding photography or trying to build your portfolio, second shooting is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience, hone your skills, and build valuable relationships with other professionals in the industry.
