Downtown raleigh, NORTH CAROLINA

Kailah & Jordan

As a photographer, I love how each engagement session tells a unique story, and downtown Raleigh provides the perfect backdrop for couples who want a mix of urban energy and intimate romance. From the historic architecture to the vibrant city streets, downtown Raleigh has an undeniable charm that makes every shot feel special. I recently had the opportunity to photograph an amazing couple’s engagement session in the heart of the city, and I can’t wait to share the magic we captured together. Kailah and Jordan were a tad nervous at the beginning as most couples when stepping in front of the camera but with the results you could not tell at all. They were so photogenic and elegant!

Meet Kailah and Jordan a couple whose chemistry and fun-loving energy were absolutely contagious. From the moment we met, I could tell they were ready to celebrate their relationship in a big way. They wanted their engagement session to reflect not only their love for each other but also their connection to Raleigh—the city where they first met, fell in love, and are now building their future together.

When we were discussing locations, they immediately thought of downtown Raleigh. It was the perfect setting: modern, stylish, and full of personal significance for them. We were able to incorporate iconic city landmarks with the intimacy of a quiet, romantic moment in between.

Downtown Raleigh offers a stunning array of settings for any photographer. Whether you’re drawn to the industrial aesthetic of brick buildings or the greenery of the local parks, Raleigh’s mix of old and new is perfect for couples who want a modern, yet timeless feel to their photos. Here are a few of my favorite spots in downtown Raleigh that helped set the tone for this shoot:

1. The Historic Architecture

We started our session near the North Carolina State Capitol, a beautifully preserved 19th-century building with classic architecture. The grand columns and stone details added a sense of timeless elegance to the photos, and the warm afternoon light made the scene feel even more romantic.

2. Fayetteville Street

Next, we made our way to Fayetteville Street, Raleigh’s bustling main street. The urban vibe of the street with its modern buildings and neon signs added an exciting, city-chic element to the session. I love how the energy of the street contrasts with the intimate moments between the couple.

As a photographer, my goal is to make sure every couple feels comfortable and authentic in front of the camera. For this session, I made sure to capture both candid and posed moments, allowing the couple’s true personalities to shine through.

1. Natural, Candid Moments

I love taking a relaxed approach to engagement sessions, allowing the couple to interact with each other naturally. I even just try and make jokes so they feel more comfortable with just me in their precense. It their first time meeting me and I am asking a lot of them. So breaking the tension with some fun jokes, carefree chatter always breaks the ice and soon I will have candid moments effortlessly.

2. Guided Poses for Intimacy

While candid shots are great, some couples feel more comfortable with a little guidance. I love guiding couples through light poses, like a close embrace, hands intertwined, or gazing into each other’s eyes. This helps them feel more relaxed and ensures we get both intimate, posed shots and the candid moments that reflect their love story.

3. Playful Shots

We also had some fun with the session! From playful twirls to jumping in the air, there were lots of lighthearted moments. Downtown Raleigh is a perfect backdrop for this type of energy because it provides so much variety—everything from quiet alleyways to open plazas where the couple could really let loose and have fun.

What I love most about shooting in downtown Raleigh is how it perfectly reflects the couple’s dynamic. It’s vibrant, eclectic, and full of energy—just like the love between Kailah and Jordan. Whether you’re drawn to the architecture, the street art, or the natural beauty of the parks, Raleigh offers so much variety in one small area, making it an ideal location for an engagement session.

For couples who want their session to feel fresh, modern, and full of life, downtown Raleigh is the perfect choice. Plus, it offers easy access to a variety of spots, which means more opportunities for variety in the photos.

Capturing Kailah and Jordan's engagement session in downtown Raleigh was such a wonderful experience. From the beautiful architecture to the bustling streets and intimate moments, we were able to create a diverse and meaningful set of images that truly tell their love story. If you're considering an engagement session in Raleigh, I highly recommend exploring all that downtown has to offer. There’s something so special about the combination of the city’s charm and the raw emotion between two people in love.
