Engagement sessions are a beautiful way for couples to celebrate their love and document their journey together before the big day. As a photographer, I particularly love beach engagement shoots. The stunning natural light, soft sands, and picturesque backdrops create the perfect setting for capturing authentic moments. In this blog post, I’ll share some tips and inspiration for planning a memorable beach engagement shoot.

For Shelby and Austin we were shooting at Kitty Hawk beach in the Outer banks it offered a unique atmosphere that brings out the romance. With the sound of waves crashing, the gentle sea breeze, and the vast horizon, it creates an environment that encourages intimacy and connection. Plus, the natural beauty of the surroundings makes for breathtaking photos that they’ll cherish forever.

Timing is everything when it comes to capturing the perfect shot. I recommend scheduling your beach engagement shoot during the golden hour—shortly after sunrise or just before sunset. The soft, warm light enhances skin tones and creates a magical glow that adds to the romantic vibe of your photos. We had at least 10-15 minutes of golden hour due to the sand dunes cutting off some of the light. Luckily we had steps that I brough the couple too to ensure I got the beautiful sunset.

Tip: Check the local sunrise and sunset times to find the best window for your shoot!

Choosing the right outfits is key to a successful beach engagement shoot. I recommend wearing light, flowing fabrics that complement the relaxed beach vibe. Soft pastels, whites, and earthy tones work beautifully against the backdrop of sand and sea. Shelby who had no clue she was about to be proposed to did exactly this! Beautiful white dress that just looked stunning on her and did not over shadow the surroundings.

Tip: Avoid busy patterns that can be distracting in photos. Instead, consider coordinating colors with your partner for a cohesive look.

While beach settings are naturally beautiful, accessories can enhance your look and add a personal touch. Flowing scarves, sun hats, or even flower crowns can add a whimsical element to your photos. Just be mindful of items that could blow away in the wind! Shelby's twin sister, Jordan actually set up a beautiful heart shaped flower display with a light up sign that said "will you marry me?". As we twin myself having her so involved was so touching.

Tip: Bring along a couple of props that reflect your personality as a couple, such as a picnic blanket, a beach ball, or even a bottle of champagne to celebrate!

When choosing a beach for your engagement shoot, consider locations that are meaningful to you as a couple. Whether it’s the beach where you had your first date or a favorite spot for weekend getaways, having personal significance will make the photos even more special.

Tip: Research the beach in advance to find unique spots—rock formations, tide pools, or hidden dunes can add variety to your shoot.

While posed shots are important, some of the best photos come from candid moments. I always encourage couples to engage in activities they love, whether it’s walking along the shore, splashing in the waves, or sharing a sweet kiss at sunset. These authentic interactions create beautiful, genuine images that truly capture your love story.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to be yourselves—laugh, joke, and just enjoy the moment together!

After the shoot, consider making a day of it! Grab a cozy blanket and a picnic, or stroll along the beach to soak in the memories you just created. This downtime not only allows you to relax but also offers a chance to reflect on the experience together.

A beach engagement shoot is not just about taking pictures; it’s about celebrating your love in a stunning environment. As a photographer, I’m here to help you create beautiful memories that reflect your unique story. If you’re planning a beach engagement session, I’d love to connect and capture the magic of your love!
